Chapter Eleven

“We found your backup weapon.”

“You mean, it was exactly where I told you it would be? In the bottom of the nightstand?” Elijah widened his eyes. “That is good to know. Thank you for the update.”

Melissa lifted a brow. “Neither of your guns showed signs of recently being fired.”

“Again, good to know.”

“Same situation with your associate, Gideon Ranier.”

“The good news keeps coming.”

Her eyebrow lowered. “Do you enjoy being flippant?”

“Actually, I’m usually not. I blame the personality change on Gideon. You stay around someone too much, and their bad habits will rub off on you.”

She did not appear amused. Fair enough, he wasn’t particularly amused, either. Maybe they could try a new tactic? “How about you stop treating me like a suspect?”

“I would, if you could stop being one.”

A wince. “That hurts.”

“It was supposed to.” She looked over her shoulder at the closed door. “No lawyer? I can’t believe Aspen Gray hasn’t already appeared.” Her focus shifted back to him.

“I don’t need her.” Aspen’s job was to protect Penelope, not him. He knew how to handle cops in his sleep.

“You don’t need her…because you have nothing to hide?”

He had plenty to hide. “What have you learned about the dead man?”

“Other than the fact that he was murdered, you mean? Murdered before the fire.”

“Just how much before…?” That was what truly interested him.

She stared back at him.

He glanced up at the ceiling—and the water spots that darkened the white paint. “Why don’t we save time? You take me to your ME. I can ask all kinds of insightful questions, I can consult for you—as I already offered to do—and then we can solve this case together. Don’t worry. You can take full credit. Just send me like a box of croissants or something as a thank you. I will stay fully in the shadows.”

“I know what you do for fun.”

His gaze slid back to her. “Is this about the hiking? The water skiing? Because I am actually terrible at water skiing—”

“I know about your little club.”

Elijah kept the faint grin on his face. “I do belong to several organizations. Some charitable, in fact. You’ll need to be a little more specific.”

“Hayden Comack.”

His grin faded. No way could he think of that bastard and smile.

“Hayden was wanted in connection with the disappearance of three women outside of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. He’d been questioned, charged, then released before trial because a very jittery DA didn’t think there was enough evidence to convict.”

His arms crossed over his chest. “Yeah. Heard all of that changed. Heard the authorities were given some tips that led to the discovery of one of those missing women. The DA got over those jitters with that development.”

“Her body. Yes. And the tips came from an online group.” Her stare never wavered. “They call themselves the Ice Breakers. Because they think they can solve cold cases.”

“That victim had been missing for three years,” he said slowly. “I’d call that cold. And if they found her, I don’t believe they think they can do anything…they know they can.
